Mopar Brake Pads

Brake pads are critical parts of disc brake systems, just like brake rotors are. They're attached to brake calipers, and their job is to contact the rotors and create friction. This resistance is what slows wheel movement, eventually stopping tire spin.

There are four kinds of brake pads for sale online these days -- organic, metallic, ceramic, and carbon fiber.

  • Most cars use organic brake pads, as they're reliable, economical, they don't produce a lot of brake dust, and they're easier on rotors than other kinds -- in other words, because they're great for normal, everyday driving.
  • Metallic brake pads feel a tad firmer, withstand heat better, and resist brake fade.
  • Ceramic brake pads, on the other hand, are more dependable in wet weather, they're quieter than other types of pads, and their brake dust isn't as sticky.
  • Carbon fiber brake pads, however, are exceptional by comparison -- they're built tough, resistant to extremely high temperatures, and they deliver more stopping power than other kinds.

Signs of Bad or Failing Brake Pads

Unfortunately, no brake pad lasts indefinitely, no matter what kind it is. They typically are good for 40,000 to 50,000 miles at a time before replacement is necessary. Luckily, there are signs that'll tell you it's time for a change. They include:

  • ABS or brake warning lights on your dashboard
  • Pad wear
  • Damaged pads
  • Brake whines and vibrations
  • Taking longer to slow down and stop
  • Grinding sounds

Grinding noises usually mean your rotors are warped, with damage likely caused by serious brake pad wear.
