Mopar Brake Drums
A brake drum is one of the many parts of a drum brake system, along with brake shoes. There are four types of these systems, and how each works isn't complicated.
A regular drum brake has shoes that press on the drum's inner surface. A clasp brake, however, has shoes that press on the drum's outside. A pinch brake, on the other hand, clamps the drum between two shoes. Lastly, a band brake uses a flexible belt, which wraps around and presses the drum.
Whatever kind of drum brakes your vehicle has, the drum itself is the rotating cylinder part of the brake. When a shoe presses it, friction occurs; that resistance is what slows your wheels and eventually stops your tires. Not one lasts forever, though. Sooner or later, any can wear out and go bad. Luckily, there are several symptoms you can look for, including:
- Unusual brake pedal pressure, vibration, or shuddering
- Abnormal noises when you step on your brakes, like scraping or scratching
- A parking brake that's loose or isn't working (for reasons other than brake cable problems)
