Mopar Brake Shoes

2020 Ram ProMaster 1500

Change vehicle

If your vehicle has a drum brake system, it's likely it uses brake shoes instead of brake pads. They're crescent-shaped pieces of welded steel with resistance-creating surface materials that, when rubbed, produce friction -- the very resistance that slows and stops wheels and tires.

If your drum brakes are the everyday kind, their shoes press their inner surfaces. If you've got clasp brakes, though, the shoes press the drum's exterior. If you have pinch brakes, the drum gets clamped between a pair of shoes. If yours is a band brake, though, a flexible belt wraps around the drum.

How to Tell if Your Brake Shoes Are Bad

Regardless of what kind of brakes you've got, shoes can wear out, start to go bad, and fail eventually. Luckily, there are three signs of this that you can look for, such as:

  • Odd noises, such as scrapes and squeaks, both when pressing and releasing the brake pedal
  • Less responsive brakes -- taking longer to stop, especially
  • A parking brake that's loose or isn't working the way it should
