An AC compressor powers the air conditioner in a car. More specifically, it puts the gaseous refrigerant in the AC system under pressure. Then, it passes the gas on to a condenser, which turns it into a liquid. That fluid passes through an expansion valve, where it returns to a gas state, but this time, at a lower pressure. Finally, an evaporator quickly cools the gas, with help from a fan. The chilled air that results travels through the vehicle's ducts, out its vents, and into the cabin, keeping everyone comfortable during drives on warm days.

But what drives AC compressors themselves, though? Engine accessory belts. If yours gets too worn out and slips, it's just one of many causes of a compressor going bad. Luckily, when that happens, there are signs you can look for. They include:

  • When the cabin temperature seems higher than normal. In this case, a couple compressor parts may have failed, or your air conditioning may be leaking refrigerant.
  • When the compressor runs too noisy.
  • When the compressor clutch seizes up, gets stuck, or won't otherwise move.

If you're seeing any of these symptoms, run an inspection.
