Mopar Brake Rotors
Brake rotors are the discs in a disc brake system, which attach to a vehicle's wheel hubs via ribs. Their job: clamping to brake calipers, which have brake pads attached. All three parts rub together, creating the friction required for slowing and stopping. Rotors also help get rid of the main byproduct of the braking process -- excess heat.
There are four types for sale these days: blank & smooth, otherwise called "smooth;" slotted; drilled, also called "cross-drilled;" and drilled & slotted. Many cars use smooth, while a lot of SUVs and trucks use either slotted or drilled, and some sports cars and performance vehicles use drilled & slotted.
- Smooth rotors come in solid or vented form. They're easier on brake pads, resistant to cracking, rust-repellent, long-lasting, and best of all, low-cost -- in other words, designed for everyday driving.
- Slotted rotors are spiral-grooved to help them channel away dust and debris. This helps them keep their own surfaces clean, not to mention that it improves airflow across them.
- Cross-drilled rotors have holes drilled all the way through them, and they've got larger surface areas. This makes them great at dissipating heat and more dependable in wet driving conditions. They're also ideal for track use and when towing.
- Drilled & slotted rotors provide the best features of both slotted and cross-drilled rotors, making them performers that stand out from the rest.
When do Brake Rotors Need to be Replaced?
According to most owner's manuals, every 70,000 miles or so. You can always review yours for more details.
You can also keep an eye out for signs your rotors may be failing or may have gone bad. They include damaged surfaces, wobbly brakes, and unusual noises when braking. If you see any such symptoms, do an inspection and change any rotors that you need to. However, be sure you swap them out in pairs to keep your vehicle braking as best it can.
